I have leghorn chickens and today I got my first egg . but it was a small brown egg . what happened ? they are supposed to large white eggs . funny it happened on april fools day lol even the chickens get in on the pranks !! but really has anyone had this happen ?

I can't speak to the color of the egg, but I can speak to the size. Pullet eggs are usually smaller starting out then when they have been laying awhile. They will gradually get larger (although you may get some larger ones on the way there…)

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X2 what Yay Chicks said so far as egg size, pullets usually start laying fairly small eggs that gradually get larger over the next few months until they are the size usual for the breed... not counting the occasional odd or double egg. I wonder if one or more of your birds aren't some other breed, White Rocks are pretty popular and they look like a heavy leghorn, or there are several leghorn mixes that hatcheries breed that look a lot like leghorns that also lay brown eggs.

X3 They can lay small eggs until they get their egg machines in gear. Hopefully the large eggs start coming soon.

Welcome to our flock and enjoy all your poultry adventures!

Well, that's a leghorn avatar pic you've got there, but you have at least one mixed breed in your hen house. Purebred leghorns lay only white eggs. No worries, though. Brown eggs taste just as good!

Good luck with your chicken raising adventures, and I hope you find everything you need to know! Glad to have you with us. Don't forget to take a look at BYC's very useful learning center (If you haven't already)!
They will usually lay small eggs until they get into the egg making cycle.
