Leghorns?!

Quote: After you bathe them make sure they stay warm so they don't get sick. I had to bathe my younger chicks because they were SO messy, unlike my older chicks (who have never needed any bathing yet), and we patted them dry as much as we could, and we had to try to be fast to get them back under the warming lamp (they were about 3wks first bath, and they were filthy and I was so nervous).

Ya, I'm gonna put our large dog kennel into the coop, which stays pretty warm around this time of year, so they can be warm, I'll know where they are, and the other chickens can't pull at them. We may just bring warm water out to the coop and do it in there, because it's fairly windy at our place right now. :)

Well, >:/
Went to bathe the leghorns, noticed some black and a little brown stuff all over the second hen I put in the water, realized, OH S***! mites! (Sorry for language)
SO MAD! Me and my sis have been dusting chickens for the last 2 hours! Before we started chooks though I had to dust the coop, and that took half an hour to move bedding, dust, then put bedding back. And we are only 2/3 of the way done!
I feel so DUMB though! I should have checked hens for mites before we bought them! >:/

do NOT feel dumb~ You are remedying the situation! I've heard it can happen in even the cleanest of coops. I'm trying to keep a close eye on it because I'm a little paranoid about stuff like that too.

Thanks, I'm sorry about the rude post too, I've been awake for almost twelve hours, now dusting still, and probably am not gonna go to sleep til i get the dust washed off me, so basically it won't be for another 4-5 hours 'til I get to sleep, and I've got school tomorrow. :( (sigh) another typical day for a busy teen :/

Quote: I didn't think your post was rude at all. You were expressing frustration. I just don't think you're dumb. It can happen to anyone at any time during warmer months right? I'd suggest getting washed up and continuing your treatment tomorrow, you need rest and it can wait until after work/school.

Mites happen. It's just part of keeping chickens. You certainly aren't dumb. You may not have found them before you brought them home, but you did find them before they could spread.

In my experience mites seem to prefer certain birds just like mosquitoes prefer certain humans. Just keep an eye on those tastier hens.

Thanks for the inspirational support, I and my sis finished about 45 mins ago and then I brushed my mare and foal down REALLY quick, so now I'm waiting for my mom and sis to be ready to go home so I can shower, me and sis will be having a race! Lol :)
