Leghorn hens are flighty but we think they are smart. They don't tame easily but our White Leghorn roo, Whitey, just lost his life defending his flock. He, in contrast to the hens, was pretty tame and quiet. He did so many funny, smart, and amazing things that I am considering writing a short story about him. And he was the best flock leader we ever had, as far as knowing how to protect them. They are also fairly hardy and long lived; Whitey was ten and still going strong, and our three pure bred White Leghorn hens were getting up there, too; two died from accidental causes but the third lived to be about eight; I think she died from stress related causes, actually. I recommend them highly! We have some white leghorn crosses now, which, so far, seem pretty hardy. White Leghorns do have big combs, though, and seem to be more prone to frostbite on their combs then some other breeds.
