Thank you... that is what I was thinking... but *he* hasn't made a peep yet... so I started to doubt myself.

He is very sweet and shy.... at what point will a roo get cranky ..... if they end up that way?

It depends on the boy. Some start developing an attitude early on, at 3 or 4 months old. Some don't start causing problems until they are closer to a year old. And some stay nice.

I found that my cockerel 'tested me out' when his hormones started flowing - 5 or 6 months or so. He didn't turn vicious and start attacking me, but he tried to stand his ground when I approached, and that sort of defiant behaviour. I started 'walking through him' rather than around him, and that put him back in his box. He grew up to be a lovely rooster!

Not all roosters are bad. And it's not all to do with training either. I think breeding has a lot to do with it. If he comes from good stock (for example, his Father) then he stands a good chance of being a good rooster too. Nothing is guaranteed of course, so use caution from the 5 month to 1 1/2 year mark. In that period his nature should be revealed.
