The no meat thing is only on Fridays. And kids under 13 is it ? Don't have too do it. My kids try to eat less but they are growing. But we do no meat on Fridays. We go go church as much as we can but we are roman catholic so we prefer Latin masses, and not to many churches still do them. Although the incense makes my hubby sneeze
I thought this was interesting. The start of Lent is determined by counting back from Easter 40 days. Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon after or on the vernal equinox. Interesting I thought. I am trying to figure out what I want to give up this year. I gave up chocolate one year. It wasn't easy!
In New Orleans they celebrate Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday. This is the feast day before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. I think the idea is that you get all the rah-rahs out before a time of sacrifice and reflection.
While I know it was a joke, religious jokes are fairly likely to cause problems.
I do remember Mardi Gras down in New Awleans....an experience I would never forget! I was about 13 years old and I never saw so many bare breasted women LOL! My mom had to remind my dad to pay attention to the ground level because he would probably knock himself cold on the lampposts! Oh, the food! King cake and all that glitter! After that has been overwith, I do not think I would ever go back to that rauchy party..too loud, too obxious and had a royal headache after that. I've had my fill but never could get enough of Cafe de Monde beinet donuts!

I was raised Catholic, and I understand the concept of Fat Tuesday, but the truth is, if you were walking with the Lord, on a daily basis, there'd be no need for one last fling of debauchery.
I was raised Catholic. Had to do the whole Catechism thing. As I remember Lent was the 40 days preceding Palm Sunday. We had to theoretically give up something. I wanted to give up going to church, but it didn't work out. I think Mom and Dad gave up s*x. No meat on Fridays during Lent season. Prior to Vatican II it was every Friday. I used to hate Lent season. They crammed a lot of Holy days in during that period and My Dad didn't miss a Sunday Mass in his whole life. Until I was 18 I didn't either.
Traditionally Fat Tuesday was a day to use up a lot of the ingredients you wouldn't use in the next 40 days. Getting rid of flour and eggs etc. It just evolved into a party because everything in the states does.
When I was growing up Catholic, we kids still ate 3 squares a day, but Fridays was no meat. We ate fish sticks a lot
I believe that kids under a certain age, pregnant woman and people with specific health conditions (ex diabetics) were exempt from the fasting. It's been a long time since I was Catholic though, so I may not be up on all the new rules.
