Leonard Coops?

My experience here in the Sandhills is that in our brutal summers I have to have either DEEP shade or at least double, maybe triple the recommended 1 square foot per bird to keep the temperatures under 100F once it gets over 90F. :)
Hi, yes I agree here in NC summer heat is more a worry then winter cold. Most of my breeds are cold tolerant but struggle in temps over 85F. I’m using HC all around bottom of coop, trenching at least 6” deep, running cloth inside and filling w/crushed gravel. So, overall I’ve got 10x10 run, 8x10 space under coop to provide deep shade and dirt baths, and 8x7 indoor coop area. So around 240 ft^2 area in total. I’ll attach more pix soon. Currently only have 9 chickens so we’re good on space. Thanks! 😄

coop and run look great!

i see a good spot for ventilation up under the peak of the roof, in these triangular areas. i think this picture is looking at the back wall but if you do them front and back you’ll get a nice cross-vent effect. cut them out and replace with HC and you’ll have a good bit more ventilation up high where you want it
Great idea! Proper ventilation in summer is my top priority! Thanks!

Hi! I wanted to share some new photos of our chicken run and redesigned Leonard coop, Close up on the 6” trench around run. Also the poop tray gurney system I designed for under perches…so far for 2 wks all I’ve had to do is pooper scoop! It’s nearly mess free! I use sand under perches. It’s non toxic and chickens need to eat grit anyway for digestion. Of course my chickens got their holiday lights up first! :)

And I feel I should probably be posting this coop design stuff somewhere else! I want to help as many folks as possible trouble shoot!

Hi all, I’m researching coops, my current 3x7 coop of over 3 years, is not able to be refurbished any longer due to severe wood rot. I live in NC; I’m looking into Leonard buildings, as they have several different factory made coops. I’d need the 8x10’ model, i will later add a run. I have 9 chickens; looking to add more in spring. I’m pricing out cost if I buy an 8x8 shed and build my own roosts, nest boxes, hen doors, poop tray, verses just get the 8x10 pre made coop that includes a feed room which I also need. The base price is $1807, it’s costly and I know Covid is not helping cost of lumber/supplies so id love to know if anyone out there owns a Leonard coop and has any advice on this? I will also need to build my own run out of hardwire cloth. My current predators are grey foxes, raccoons, skunks, feral cats. Thanks for any advice!
Coop schedule for Tuesday afternoon delivery got a call truck problem would be Wednesday reminded I had yard people coming to seed and hay my yard, baby chicks coming Wednesday electrician coming Wednesday didn’t show till after 11 am after yard folks left. Messed up newly seeded area putting coop in place. Coop has known structural defect using a 2 x4 on a runner which broke in half. Coop is not safe and unusable. Cannot build steps to gain access or predator proof by putting chicken wire in ground around it or wire between shed and ground. I was told Monday at latest to repair but customer service told me 2 1/2. -3 weeks. Baby chicks will die as I have no place to put them. Customer service is nonexistent won’t fix my yard, could care less if my new babies die. 2 1/2 -3 weeks to repair means to me they have lots of issues
