Leonard Coops?

My experience here in the Sandhills is that in our brutal summers I have to have either DEEP shade or at least double, maybe triple the recommended 1 square foot per bird to keep the temperatures under 100F once it gets over 90F. :)
Hi, yes I agree here in NC summer heat is more a worry then winter cold. Most of my breeds are cold tolerant but struggle in temps over 85F. I’m using HC all around bottom of coop, trenching at least 6” deep, running cloth inside and filling w/crushed gravel. So, overall I’ve got 10x10 run, 8x10 space under coop to provide deep shade and dirt baths, and 8x7 indoor coop area. So around 240 ft^2 area in total. I’ll attach more pix soon. Currently only have 9 chickens so we’re good on space. Thanks! 😄

coop and run look great!

i see a good spot for ventilation up under the peak of the roof, in these triangular areas. i think this picture is looking at the back wall but if you do them front and back you’ll get a nice cross-vent effect. cut them out and replace with HC and you’ll have a good bit more ventilation up high where you want it
Great idea! Proper ventilation in summer is my top priority! Thanks!

Hi! I wanted to share some new photos of our chicken run and redesigned Leonard coop, Close up on the 6” trench around run. Also the poop tray gurney system I designed for under perches…so far for 2 wks all I’ve had to do is pooper scoop! It’s nearly mess free! I use sand under perches. It’s non toxic and chickens need to eat grit anyway for digestion. Of course my chickens got their holiday lights up first! :)

And I feel I should probably be posting this coop design stuff somewhere else! I want to help as many folks as possible trouble shoot!
