Now that I have a whole year of experience keeping chickens, I feel I have accumulated some wisdom. So I thought I'd share a thought or two and invite the rest of you to share as well.

1) It is entirely possible to forget you have eggs in your pants pocket. But you'll remember when you sit down!

2) Multiple eggs in one pocket is an advanced skill. One I haven't mastered. Better to avoid.

Anyone else?

When egg production is up and you think you can start selling extra eggs again, the girls decide to go broody.

- excited children carrying eggs will end up dropping them
- some hens will be crazy! (but all will wonderful personalities!)
- an escaped hen in a no-coop-zone will cause you serious embarrassment
- you will need to clean the coop when it's raining/snowing/blowing a gale
- you will have your heart broken as you decide to cull a bird to put it out of misery
- you will bore others to death about your girls - just what did you talk about before you got them?

(I won't hijack this thread but leave an opportunity for others - sorry!)

Lessons learned from keeping a small flock:

- Mom always thinks you kept the best chicks for yourself (and she is right).
- When you don't need eggs, you get more than you can refrigerate.
- When you do need eggs, there isn't a shell to be found.
- Your beloved dog can learn to suck eggs.
- Extra roosters that you turn out to free-range will live forever, while your cage-bound and semi-ranged girls die early.
- The lovely rooster that you keep to breed with your girls will either come up missing, be eaten by a predator, or keel over unexpectedly.

I'm sure there are lots more!!

Do not assumeit is ever okay to walk in the coop with "good" shoes on because even if you just cleaned the coop, you will inevitably step in chiken poop.
