Let chickens turn compost?

Our family puts the nasty bedding from the chicken coop into a bin along with moldy food(mostly fruits and vegetables) and cracked eggs, which eventually turn out exactly as we hoped. After using it in our garden for the first year, it has never looked better! Definitely recommended!

I have tried deep litter. My chickens push it ALL out the coop door and into the run! So I guess tecnically I am composting in the run right now. I’m just worried about throwing kitchen waste straight out into the run and not in a specific spot that I can turn and water to keep the bugs down...

I just went and raked some of it into a pile to put in my garden beds. It looks like it’s actually breaking down pretty well so maybe I’ll stick with it.

The chickens will take care of the bugs.

If you put up a kick board at the door of the coop they can’t kick it out. The draw back is you have to step over it.

Agreed. The DL in coop naturally builds up at the back, under the perches. At the clean out door, I have an 8" tall board to keep the litter from falling out when I open the clean out door. (It's opened every day in the summer for extra ventilation.

@ChickenzGurl what kind of bin do you use? I've been scooping the poop board and putting it in a plastic trash can, then hauling that off to dump outside the run. When I clean out the coop, I carry that matter off to the same pile. I've been afraid of letting the chickens onto the pile since it contains moldy/bad food that they shouldn't eat and I don't want them getting worms from the old poop.

I don't usually have a garden, so don't need compost and haven't made any effort with the pile I make, but DH doesn't like it because the grass runs into it and he can't mow over it. It's just the 2 of us and he's not able to get out and garden and I'm working and helping out with the grandkids and don't have time or inclination to garden. But I certainly would be up for putting it in a bin to compost and then telling my neighbor who does garden to help himself.

I have 3 wooden bins that become very helpful even if you don’t have a garden. It’s a better way for things to decompose than throwing away vegetables and fruits
