Beautiful day here so let the chicks see the world for the first time. One of the brown leghorns discovered a little stick and of course they all had to fight over it. :pop

These are just some good ol' hatchery chicks for my mom's backyard flock so nothing fancy, but I'm excited to see how the SL wyandottes turn out.

What temp outside do you think is safest for them at a week to get some grass and fresh air? I live in Massachusetts and it’s starting to warm it we are in high 50s to low 60s this week. Is that too cold?

If they are too cold you will know really quick because they will all bunch up. If they are comfortable they'll venture out and play more.

It definitely needs to be above the 70's. I only take those younger than 3 weeks out if it's in the 80's. I generally wait until June to get my chicks so it is warm enough for them. I also place a 5 gallon pail on it's side inside my fence. It will heat up in the sun like a little brooder.

This is a great idea!

I put mine out all day at that age, under a frame of chicken wire and wood called a chicken tractor. I move it around so the ground under them is always clean. I check on them often. Putting them out during the day keeps the cage from needing to be changed so often!
