I picked up my 2nd batch of chicks today. (2 one week old australorpes, 3 two week old silver laced wynadottes) They are all active and doing well except for 1 of the Australorpes. She is eating okay (not as vigorously as the rest) and wont lay down. She keeps falling asleep while standing and seems to be a little wobbly. She is walking around but very slowly.

I know that some don't do well with traveling (30 min car ride home) so I'm keeping an eye on her. In the meantime, she has had a little sugar water, has been drinking a little on her own (but not as much as the others).

They are set up in a bathtub under the heat lamp, which I have checked the temp on. For a while, the older ones were congregating down away from the lamp and the others were following so I wondered if it wasn't warm enough down there so I put a small cardboard box at the end of the tub to encourage them all to be closer to the heat. She stood under that for a good long while then got herself some water. I'm hoping she just needed more warmth. The 2 bigger ones are starting to get some feathers and ca still move away from the heat if they need to.

Any advice is welcome. I evidently have a problem child on my hands. I'm hoping she will do better after all these adjustments.

They moved to the other end of the tub because it was to waRm for them.
Remove the box so there are warm and cooler areas so they can self adjust.
Overheating chicks will kill them.
i always use the powder electolite and vitamin water additave for new shipped chicks, and make sure to dip their beak in it a couple times to make sure they get a good dose.
Good luck

Yeah, I figured that is what they are doing and moved it out pretty soon after. She still is not doing great, but not worse either. She came from a farm so there really wasn't much trauma on the way home. 8 hrs later and she is still lethargic. I watched her eat a good bit this afternoon but not nearly as much as the rest. I have continued to dip her beak because she doesn't seem to drink that often.

We will see what happens. She is just so sad looking standing all by herself. 😥
