One of my Dominics, Mary Tom, has been gradually becoming more and more lethargic over the past week. I thought at first that she had turned broody, since she was hanging out in the nest box for most of the day, but that doesn't seem to be the case. When I would take her out of the box, she'd puff up and "grumble" with me, then go eat and scratch with the others. There is no evidence of injury, and her eyes and feet look normal. When we took her out of the box this morning, though, she settled on the ground and stayed there. Not normal behavior for Miss Mary, as she's usually the top chicken. The others have started pecking at her, too. She's about 5 years old and is in a large pen with two other hens she has been with her whole life. I'm at a loss as to what's wrong (unless it's just old age!). Does anyone have an idea? Thanks much!

Good news! Mary Tom is doing just fine. She spent several broody days in the next box, off and on, but she seems to be her old spunky, cranky self again. Still have no idea what happened to her or why she took to the box. We'll keep an eye on the old girl, though!

Thanks! I do think that's what was ailing her now. She was presenting a little differently from the other girls who go broody, so I wasn't sure. I appreciate your help!
