These ladies are about two months old, so they haven't started laying yet. But my in-laws had four exactly like them until recently and they laid large brown eggs. A co-worker of mine thinks they're Rhode Island Reds, but I think they're too light in color to be R.I.R's. I have a few ideas as to what they might be, but nothing certain.

Hello and :welcome! It looks to me that they are production red! The lighting in the pics aren't the best!

Sorry about the lighting. My backyard is pretty well shaded. I had suspected Production Red and New Hampshire both... as well as Orpington. One thing's for sure, at this point, I'm getting it narrowed down. Thanks everyone!

You're correct they're too light to be Rhode Islands. You just have a better eye for detail than your co-worker...lots of folks think there's only one red breed of chicken, so any reddish bird must be a RIR. I agree they're possibly hatchery quality New Hampshires or production reds, which are basically generic red hatchery birds that lay tons of brown eggs.

This all started because my in-laws had chickens, so my wife decided we should have chickens. Then my youngest son chose poultry production as his SAE (whatever that is) for FFA (at least I know what that is). So now I have a couple of chickens in my backyard and next spring we plan on getting more. I told my wife that we need to get a place in the country so we can have a bunch of chickens and go at this in a big way. In the meantime, I'll use this opportunity to get experience.
