I just wanted to share my little idea with ya'll ! I have 8 seperate pens to go into and feed I have to leave before sunrise to go to school in the morning so I wanted to get their water filled the night before and food rations put out but I didn't want the mice (or rats) from the woods to eat up their food at night so I bought some of those Rubbermaid containers w/ screw-on lids and took boards to make a tray for the bowls and screwed TWO screws into each bottom of the bowls (so the bowl doesn't spin when you screw the lid on & off) so I can FILL THEM UP in the evening and screw the lid on them!

When I go down in the mornings it's a flash to go in each pen and just screw the tops off!

Free buckets from the grocery store deli/bakery, a $7.00 hole saw and a few minutes, virtually spill proof (especially if you keep the lid on it) and it stays clean. I love them. I have a rooster with a scarred comb (frostbite) that couldn't eat from them. I took the hole saw and cut it out about twice as high and he has NO problems now. I'm literally using less than HALF of the feed I had been using with elevated traditional feeders.

The first one is similar to what I was thinking. I seen the commercial ones are simply a tube for the food, held off of the base an inch or so, to allow the food to fall down. The funnel seems as if it would help push the feed towards the edges better though. Anyone else?

Mine is identical to the orange bucket feeder in the first set of pictures. I got my buckets for free at the local supermarket. the deli section always has them and they were happy to recycle them to me! works great!!

7.5 gallon bucket with 6 1-1/4" holes drilled then bolted to an 18" planter bottom. I hang the feeder with a pulley system and have the rope through a trash can lid to keep the birds from perching on the bucket.

We made one out of PVC pipe and it hangs on the inside of the coop door. It has worked great. I will take a picture today and post it.
