I'm new to chickens, overall, and have a motley mix of cool chicks that I bought from hatcheries last spring.
Anyway, around here (Phx, AZ) most chicks sold in feed stores come from a hatchery in New Mexico. I couldn't find one of the breeds I wanted from them, so I ordered some from Ideal Hatchery in TX.
I also bought some extra Ameraucanas (Easter Eggers, not show type) for a person on Craigslist - we went in together on the order, as I didn't need a full 25 chicks.
So, when the EE chicks arrived, a couple caught my eye, and I swapped out a couple of my purebreds for those.
These look REALLY different from the "usual" EE's that are seen in my area. Makes sense, because EE's are mutts anyway!
One turned out this really cool bright ORANGE with blue tail feathers - she almost glows in overcast light! The other one I picked ended up being a rooster (figures) but I kept him because he was so nifty. My gal lays sky blue eggs.
Since there is so much difference in the colors, can you post photos here of your Easter Eggers, and list what hatchery they came from? (Or who you bought them from.)
I'd also like to compare them to the purebred, show quality Ameraucanas, so if you raise those, post pix for all of us to see, and please brag about your awards won with them, if you show - so other newbies like me can see what a good "purebred" is supposed to look like!
Thought this would be a fun thread for everybody on here!
Below are my pix, of the rooster and the hen. The photo in the wheelbarrow is of her at about 3 months, she looks better (and brighter) now. The rooster pic is more recent.
Usually, the ones from the New Mexico hatchery are a soft, dull, cocoa-brown color, pretty in its own way, with little or no "red" or yellow tones - kind of like tree bark. These ones from TX, as you can see, are NOT that at all!
Can't wait to see what y'all post . . . .
Thanks!
