Let's share our chicken decor!

Mom gave me 2 of her huge collection of little antique dishes, she has about every animal imaginable in these but knew I'd appreciate the chicken ones most. She said ladies used to use them for body powder, button dishes or for bits of jewelry. The little hens are the top that lift off and they're sitting on their nests (the bottom piece).








This is part of my pelican collection. It's a carved sea shell made into a night light. When it's lit up the thicker part of the carving (the darker parts) really show up. It's right over my bathroom sink and I use it daily, how did I miss it?

Oh, I used to have some of those covered glass dishes, what memories, those bring back! The blue one is especially pretty. My cousin loves pelicans. That beautiful nightlight reminds me of her.

@City farm , I haven't used either of the glass chicken dishes for anything yet. I got them as part of a huge haul of stuff from my Mom's house (we helped her sell in January) and I'm still digging out of boxes, trying to find room for everything we brought back. Now that they are "unearthed", they are sitting on a shelf above my desk. I'm not a huge nick-nack kind of person so I'm sure they'll get used for something eventually.

I've been remembering that in the olden days my mom(and others) used serving dishes for everything and had a nice presentation at the table. I remember the little doilies (sp?) they put under the candy dish on the end table etc. so it wouldn't mar the finish.

Nowadays some people just pop open a can and stick a spoon in it - ta da -serving dish.

Nowadays some people just pop open a can and stick a spoon in it - ta da -serving dish.

And some just plop the sauce pan on the table with a spoon in it. After eating, leftovers still in the pan go back in the fridge...still in the sauce pan of course. I remember the first time I was at someone's house and saw their pans (with serving spoons) in their refrigerator and thinking, wow, how lazy is that?!?

Guess we're old fashioned DD. But I'm ok with that!

Even in the really OLD days, my grandma left lunch=middle of the day dinner on the table with a cloth over it and uncovered to serve supper=evening meal. But the serving utensils were washed and replaced. But in those days we had better immune systems and our food was not bacteria prone. And raw eggs were considered healthy.

@NorthFLChick love the pelican night light a really unique item. I have seen those hen dishes in magazines and most flea/antique markets - love them. Maybe could use on a desk or craft area for small item storage. The only problem I have had using decor for storage is forgetting what and where I stuffed stuff..

I love doilies. I use paper ones on cake plates, but be careful when cutting the cake or you end up eating the doily

I can't leave candy in dishes too close or somehow they become empty.
