yes they are normally $20-$25 here but feed store had them advertised on sale for $12.99, I got four and shipped a couple to my BFF on the east coast, still less expensive than he could find them for with shipping cost!! Hope yours go on sale, keep your eyes peeled.....here it is at Walley World for $17.99

I am wondering if a rabbit nestbox heater placed under the waterer would work? I have a few of them kicking around, they're just a flat sandwich of metal with a heating element inside designed to encourage the rabbit kits to snuggle down away from the cold. Not sure if it would get hot enough.

This might be a silly question, but why put an insert in the dog water bowl? Why not just use the bowl itself?

In the past I have used a standard dog waterer with a piece of plywood covering a majority of the hole to eliminate pooping/bedding in the waterer. I'm looking at other options now that I have many more hens this winter than in the past (went from 5 hens last winter to over 20 for this winter + 3 guineas!

I just bought some watering nipples from Farmtek and am planning on filling a 5 gal bucket placing a heater inside of it. I've read a number of posts on BYC that state it works fine. I just worry about getting my girls to drink from the new watering set up. They seem pretty smart, so I hope one of them figures it out quickly and gets the others to do it. Haven't found the height the bucket is supposed to be yet for east access for the girls to drink from it, but I'm still searching prior posts for the answer. Anyone know?

I find it alot eaisier to pop out the insert, sanitize it in the dishwasher, and just have a spare to place back in the bowl. Otherwise unplugging the whole dish feeding the cord through the wire run and washing the electrical parts in the sink wears the bowls out sooner. The inserts are mainly for ease of cleaning. I can carry out a gallon milk jug with their feed in the mornings to top off or replace the water completely if needed. Most days it stays clean enough to just top off because I have it elevated on a large cement block.

Great idea! I Love it, perfect for the OACV and easy to clean.
Thanks for sharing
PS I've been unsuccessful in finding that 1/2 size paint pail, can you tell me where you got it or the size. thanks again

Home Depot $2.49 in the paint section is where I got mine, paint stores may have them too....The handle makes it easier to get in and out without spilling, also I picked up two so I can just carry out a clean one and bring the other back to the house for cleaning. I use OACV too, so wanted to stay plastic! I started with a stainless steel dog dish because I already had it, but the pails are great. Some folks use ice cream buckets but they're $5 and I definitely don't need the ice cream LOL. The blue dish in the picture is over 14 years old and still working, I paid $25 for it when my old dog was a pup. I picked up another for a spare when they had a sale at the farm store here recently, not sure why this one may last forever ;-)
