Lets talk about goats!

Quote: Ok! Thanks!

Aw, thank you. They've stolen our hearts. Oh, by the way, have you gotten any goats yet? I heard awhile back that you really wanted some.

I haven't because 1. We have lots of puppies and my mom isn't ready for them. 2. We are going on vacation. So yeah. Hopefully end of summer I will get some. Don't have any yet though...

Well that's a bummer. At least it's not out of the question.

Hopefully you'll get them soon!

What's you're favorite breed?

Hey! None of the girls are expecting, we already had our round of kids, but I was wondering about your saneens personality. What's she like?
She acts like my boxer dogs. She has to be next to me if Im in her pen, comes runnng all the way over to the gate to meet me even when Its not feeding time, She would love to climb in my lap is she was small enough to. She gets between me and the neighbors dogs when they come over to smell around her pen, guess she dosn't know if she can trust them even with the fence there but its funny she protects me. Crazy thing is this is behavior I would expect from a goat I bottle raised from a baby, but I've had her for about 5 weeks now. lol. Guess Im her herd for now. I know she is lonely, but I figured she would need separated from other goats this close to kidding, so I spend alot of spare time sitting in her pen with her. She is by far more loving than I ever expected a goat to be, but it could be a pregnancy thing. I've heard they can get like this and be more stand-offish when open or vice-versa. Saddest thing is when she calls for me when Im working where she can see me but Im not with her.

I dont have goats yet but we are planning to get 3-4 Nubian does and maybe a buck. we live on a mountain and we have coyotes pretty badly around here we have at least 3 different packs of 10+ with in a half mile radius.

I just need to know would coyotes go after a 135 + pound goat?

Should we get an LGD?

what type of fence is the best for nubians?

how many sqaure feet per goat where they sleep? durring the day the goats will have nearly 2 acres to graze on.

even though they have 2 acres of a wide range of plants and trees to nibble on I still need to feed them goat feed right? should it be medicated?

for mommas to be should they get a bit of goat balancer and sweet feed? or just feed them like everyone else?

Do I have to have a milk stand to milk them on? or does it just make it easier on the person that is milking the goat?

I think that is all of my questions for now :)

In my area we have coyotes, but they get hunted year round and aren't really a problem at my place. (we back up to a large field that gets cattle rotated n alot) Also my Boxers keep the occasional wild thing run off or dead. (not the traditional farm do I know, but you should see them with the chickens, you'd want a couple too) For you, you should look into getting a nice big great pyrenees. Whats commonly found here, and I often see pups thats a cross with a golden lab for free and have already been working with their mom, they are just the result of the bird dog in love with the sheep dog.

. Fencing is the same for all goats because they can be escape artists.

I use 2"x4" weld wire, but you can use bigger if you will have only dehorned (disbudded) goats. Electric fence is always great, and works well along with the weld wire but you may not need it depending on your goats. Forget barbed wire unless you are just running one strand of it along the top of the weld wire. Im sure others can tell you more on fencing. 2 acres for 4-5 goats should be plenty for forage, but you'll need to give alfalfa in the winter or anytime the field is looking bare. I would only give grain (or ration) when your milkng. A couple cups each time should be all you need, it will keep the goat busy and they will learn that they get a treat and will be easier to get them to come in twice a day. You'll get to the to point they will be waiting for you at the gate Im sure. Don't forget to have minerals free choice, even with 2 acres they may still need it since I've yet to hear of any confined area that covers the full spectrum of mineral needs naturally. Yes, invest in a stand. Build it yourself or buy a sturdy one. Its actually easy (to me) to milk without a stand, but when it comes time for any shots, deworming, hoof trimming, they are invaluble because you most likely won't have to have a second person to hold your goat while you do whats needed.
