My boys!
They're Nigerian dwarfs! I love em!

We are looking to get dairy goats in the next couple of years. We are a family of 8 and go through about 1 - 1 1/2 gallons of milk per day right now. Can anyone give me an idea of how many goats I would need to produce enough milk for our family? I really like the idea of Nigerian Dwarfs because I heard that their production can be almost as high as the larger dairy breeds. Is this really true? Also, how hard is it go get a reliable milk supply year round? I have read a little about staggering breedings to accomplish this. Any information is greatly appreciated!

8 pounds (approximately) per gallon. Young milkers give between 4-7 pounds of milk each per day (Nubians) from what I have read, and heard from my breeder. I'd have at least 3. :)

Our goat Mimi gets to run loose in our backyard now and again. She loves my 2yr old, and my 2yr old loves her!

I just got into goats. They are mainly Alpines, some are crossed with LaMancha or Nubian, which makes for some pretty wild colored coats.
