Lets talk about goats!

Ok I'm new to this thread... We got a goat back in October and she was supposed to kid with in three weeks.... Well she didn't(I have driven my self crazy checking her) anyway in is now February and I still think she is prego and huge... So I'm thinking she was breed right before we got her.... I guess my question is what are the signs I need to look for when she gets close... This is a pic of her the brown one

Goats gestation is 5 months. So if you go 5 months from the day you bought her and she doesn't kid, she might have missed getting bred. When she gets real close, if she is bred, you may notice her losing her mucous plug and the top of her tail head will get soft in preparation for delivery. Sometimes udders will start to fill ahead of delivery but not all does do.
Good luck with your goats,
Christie

What a pretty little doe! Are they Nigerian Dwarfs? I am in EXACTLLY the same situation as you are!! We had an accidental mating right when she seemed to be in heat, so expected her to kid 2 months ago, but she's just getting bigger & bigger-I hope it's twins! (After the accident, I just left them together so I guess she got pregnant later.) San Clementes can breed year round but maybe that doesn't mean they come into season every single month of the year? I still haven't figured it out. I heard pygmy goats are like that--does anyone here have pygmies?

Any way my doe has been having some mucous for almost a week but has gotten skittish all of a sudden so I haven't been able to feel her ligaments. I am not very good at it anyway. I just keep my birthing kit by the back door & look at her several times a day. (You might not really see the mucous right away, but she'll have straw stuck to her bottom or just her hair kind of stuck together. Though my last doe didn't have that till just before she kidded-they like to keep us guessing!)

Is the white goat in the photo a buck? (Or is that an udder?) My buck was HORRIBLE when he was in with a kidding doe-chasing her around trying to mate--luckily I was home & I ran out & guarded her with a spray bottle till her baby was born. That could have ended up with 2 dead goats...a really scary thought! Thank goodness I was home!!! After that I built a serious buck pen-the fence is only 5' tall so I made a ceiling out of more fencing so it's like a big cage. I just divided off the end of the goat pen so I can open the gate & let them be together most of the time & use all the space together. Unfortunately my back yard is little so the pen is small. I feel bad he's been in there so long, though he seems content lying in his plastic chaise lounge.

She is with the male as of now and yes they are Nigerian dwarf... But we have a birthing stall so she can be by her self, we put her In At night just in case...this a picture from the back of her the lighting is bad but she just started to come in to milk about 2 weeks ago? This goat is driving me nuts lol, we just got the male about a month ago so

Ethal, our Nigerian Doe, was around the same color.

We didn't breed her until she was like three or four years-old and perhaps for that reason she couldn't give birth. Her first baby blocked the passage way so she had to have a C-section to get the second out (it was too late for the first). Buckeye was nice, healthy, and adorable though!

Its hard to know when they will go into labor, but you certainly will know when they are in labor. They get restless and pace and get up and down and the water will break.

This is Ethel in labor

This is Buckeye, the little kid. He stayed with us the first night, then was reintroduced to her and she took right to him and raised him well. He really liked people though.

She does look close! Is her vulva kind of plump? Looks like it. Are these going to be your first kids? There is absolutely NOTHING cuter than a baby goat! Have fun!

From what I understand this would be her third kidding her last set was triplets, I really hopping for twins this go around... Her v looks a little more puffy then normal... She was letting me pet on her and check her daily but this past few days she won't let me touch her? I really hope she goes with in the next week or so. I will post pictures when and if she ever kids lol

Thanks for all your help.. I will be sure I know next time she is breed lol this guessing game is for the birds!!!

Sounds just like my girl with the skittishness all of a sudden. I'll post when she finally kids too. Lets keep track of & post any further signs or changes we've noticed leading up to the birth! I'm just going to write down every time one of the does is in heat from now on-maybe I can figure out a pattern.
