Let's talk about them turkeys!

Any idea about showing turkeys? I just want to enter something into the show this year

I doubt they could win, but are they worthy of the Cumberland County fair? The hen, my tom needs to put on some weight, I can feel his breast bone super easily.

Here's a pic of my Tom and Turkey butt. I can't think of anything else to call her yet.

I don't know for sure on the beard, but a longer beard would indicate a mature older tom to the younger ones. For mating the toms will strut, they make a drumming sound, they will stomp their feet. The will lengthen and retract the snood, change it's color from a dark rich red to blue to white.

Thanks Gloria, and they love shiney things - rings etc. I was out with our Bourbon Reds one day working on a gate, trying to pound in a nail. They had me surrounded and would peck at the nail head, the hammer, me, they would try to carry off the nails. I would have to push them away with one hand and swing the hammer. I just knew I was going to end up bashing one sooner or later. It only took about 4 times as long as it should have to do the job but the turkeys had a blast helping.

Mine will be 16 weeks old tomorrow, 4 months. Do they ever learn to come in out of the rain? They have all kinds of places to come in, but no they stay out there in it.

I'm worrying about winter coming. Will they be okay outside?

Oh yeah, they love my ring and my blond curls and my toenails too! Silly birds!

I know what you mean, Steve. They sure can be annoying sometimes. I was out weeding my garden the other day. I think for every weed I pulled they pulled 3 more out from the back of my hand!
