Let's talk Cuckoo and WHITE marans... breeding strategies...

That's what to do I have a couple of Blues and I can't tell so I'll be mating them to Cuckoos...sorry to hear about your heat we've been so cool and windy when our 100+ days come it's going to feel hotter not even getting 80 here today such strange weather

Here is my "wild" that hatched last winter. He is 6 months old now and starting to express gold as well as more barring. So is he what they consider the light colored barred? I know that golds are still a project, it's been interesting to see how everyone from this group has changed. I was hoping to find him a home before Thursday (auction night) but no luck so far.

He has more gold than shows in the pictures, I just couldn't get it to show up.

Thanks for the update pictures.
If I had to guess, I'd say he's split silver/gold, S/s+ and probably wheaten - was he white/cream as a chick?
He also looks like he's heterozygous (one dose) for Darkbrown that pulls black to the wings and tail, and reduces black in the hackle, breast and body.

His barring looks single dose, even though he's as light as a double dose cuckoo, it's the other genes pulling out the black not the barring. His pattern is not "fine" enough.

But I like his type, handsome boy.

Can anyone explain double mutant white Marans to me. Are they "true" white or a sport? Will they breed true? I know it may be a silly ? but I don't know unless I ask. Thanks in advance

Not sure what you mean by double mutant.
There are two common mutations for white. Dominant white and Recessive white, they work separately, a bird can have both mutations. Dominant white clears the shanks too, recessive does not. I believe dominant affects eye color more than recessive. Dominant in one dose does not clear the pheomelanin (reg pigment) only the black... that is where you get pyle colored birds. A marans could have both dominant I/I and recessive c/c, that would be a good thing, and if bred to another of its genetic makeup, it would breed true.
Most Marans are only recessive white.

So, if I remember correctly from previous posts, white marans can be thrown from a cuckoo x cuckoo pairing and would carry the recessive white gene? If you breed two recessive white gene birds together, then they should breed true AND you would maintain feathered shanks?

If all the hatchmates of these whites had the feathered shanks, you have a good chance of keeping them, and yes, they should breed true. That's the nice thing about a recessive trait. Keep an eye on shank color - it should be good because the whites should also carry barring

I just won Double White Mutant Marans eggs to incubate. Wish me luck on incubating. I was told Double meaning White feathered and White Skinned. Single would be White feather and Black skinned. I've been trying to get some white marans and I finally did.

Thank you I am not sure what is meant by double mutant either just heard some white birds referred to as "Double Mutant White" Marans so thought I would ask
