Let's talk Cuckoo and WHITE marans... breeding strategies...

Yes, I know. Kind of validates it for me that Penes were crossed into the Marans line/lines somewhere along the way. I just could never find a good pic of one (carnation comb). So, this morning I went on the Pene thread to see if someone can post a decent pic. The thread has been slow lately, so it may be awhile till someone responds. Will post the link to the pic if I get one.

If you don't get a picture soon I have some young Crele Penedesencas that are about 5 weeks but there combs are bit small still.

I went out and checked out the Penedesencas thread and someone had posted some chick pictures and sure enough I could see a sprig on each side of the comb near the back. So a Marans showing this type of comb is possibly expressing the Penedesencas genes. This might have been asked or explained but what was the reasoning for crossing Marans with Penedesencas? I'm guessing that the occurance of these sprigs is one of the issues that needs to be corrected- is there really any way to breed it out given that it is caused by 2 dominant genes which need to be brought together?

Supposedly, someone thought they'd get darker eggs from the Marans if they crossed it with a Pene. Guess it didn't work, but the damage was done, and unfortuneatly, passed along into an already small gene pool.

A good pic has been posted on the Pene thread as of this morning, thank you FlightsofFancy!

I'm thinking the only way to breed it out is with single matings, to see who may carry the gene without expressing it. May be more trouble than it is worth for me.

of course I had just finished typing up something when I lost my connection so I will try again

So was the Pene.'s crossed in before the different lines were established? Does anyone have Marans with out this gene or is this something that as you mentioned has to be controlled carefully with single matings to see who might have it or not. But given that it is a dominant gene and it takes 2 dominant genes in the correct combination for expression is it even possible to have birds that won't be carriers?

I must say the golden CM are just beautiful. I find the regular marans on the ugly side (hens, I mean in particular). I do like the blue and splash marans too.
I would love to order some GCM's this spring. I am having trouble finding them for sale at all. I really would like to get a trio or quad.
I did see them for sale at darkeggsdaily.com.............anyone familiar with them?

I checked out the site- not bad pricing but they are straight run. And a work in progress. I doubt you'll find many people selling sexed chicks like that in this variety. Its like the people that call me wanting 1 boy and 8 female lavender ameraucanas. Or 100 black copper marans- al pullets. Are they high, or what?

My GC chicks from Raven1 are hatching like crazy a day early. BIG chicks- woo! I am so relieved- really didn't want to risk any more eggs this season with the weather being so god-awful hot.
