Let's talk Golden Cuckoo Marans!

Pics
I found this cockerel photo that shows his leg and toe feathering. He has a comb back then too (pre-frostbite).

From reading it can occur occasionally on feather legged breeds. It is called Rudimentary toe. On feather legged breeds, if I remember correctly, it doesn't hurt the points during a show. Most people try not to breed them though.

Two of the 5 cockerels appear golden, the other 3 are really turning red/copper. The 2 pullets are also in the pics too.

The paint sprayers on my girls quit working for some oddball reason. Eggs are spattered with specks of dark brown. Really a shame as they laid some nice dark brown eggs. Your birds look pretty darn nice. Color of these birds are so hard to repeat and not constant. Good luck.

I wasn't needing any boys though, just trying to create some girls to start a line. I like the gold on one boy. So I might keep him for the second breeding pen. The rest are going to be sold or eaten.

The very first photos I ever seen of this color strain were all rooster pictures. Some were more beautiful than others but all were astoundingly an eye catcher. Have you ever noticed when exploring a breed line to purchase that they always display the beauty of the rooster and chicks, but seldomly show much of the hens? I have learned over time to pay more attention to the hens I am getting than the roosters because thats what I have more of. The black copper marans is definitely the "Goose that laid the golden egg" bird. They lay the darkest of all the color choices of the marans. The GCM is a difficult color to repeat and its yet to be perfected based on what I have been reading from those that own and have been breeding them. Its a struggle and yet to be mastered. Wishing you luck!

I've also discovered that lighting makes all the difference too. This is the same bird, outside lighting first and inside second. Looks like 2 different birds.
