Let's talk Golden Cuckoo Marans!

Hi, I don’t know how active this thread is but chooks man told me about it earlier in the year, I’ve skim read it but have probably missed things. I’m looking to breed my own line of English standard golden cuckoos using my French black coppers, likely with English dark cuckoos. This is probably a while away, depending on things I might have to wait a few years, but I still have some questions so I can at least plan.

What colour are we looking for in the hackles? I imagined them being essentially barred BCMs but now I’ve seen pics here I’ve realised they’re a lot paler.

Also, since they are paler, are they s+/s+ and just dilute/lacking in Autosomal red, or S/S with high autosomal red?

Am I right in saying that they should be pure for birchen ideally, rather than carrying or full wheaten?

I’ll probably think of more questions :)

Thanks

He's not a GCM but he looks a bit like what I'm seeing the roos look like. He's a buff orpington cuckoo marans cross.

I love her golden colours. Is she a birchen based, or something else? Maybe it’s just the lighting but I see a lot of brown in her body.
Thanks!
Hmmm. Out of my experience base. She is a regular hatchery Golden Cuckoo Marans. Meyers.
She has lovely feathered feet which don’t show in this picture and is an unexpectedly good flyer.
Her eggs are lovely and dark but not as dark as you see pictures of from the regular Marans.

I’ve seen people talk about them using paler eggs. I’m combining my dark egg French BCM line with my good quality English Dark and Silver Cuckoos to revive this variety in England (the chairman of the marans club tells me they’re either extinct or at least unheard of in the club).

Hopefully this will mean I can preserve the dark eggs, as being in England I have access to better quality cuckoos than the American hatcheries offer.

Good luck! Next time I expand my flock I may try for some French BCM. I love the dark eggs and think they are handsome birds.
