Let's talk Golden Cuckoo Marans!

Pics
Hi Morbius18 have you see or heard about the GGCM . this bird is all golden barred body ,hackle , lancet ,tail all. very very rare . the lady in France Berte Monique ( serious breeder, the one ho sent the black copper eggs to LP line ) bred one and she sent me a picture . gorgeous bird. his genome is totally different he s eWh/eWh s+/s+, Co/Co,Db/Db, Mh/Mh. B/B. W/W Id/Id, Pti1/Pti1.

bred from the black tail buff maran carrying both genes the Columbian Co and the Dark Brown Db gene.

It also sounds like you are describing the genotype of a Buff bird, with the exception of the barring:

Buff orpingtons do carry the white skin as well. I suppose it would be possible to create GGCM from buff orpingtons as well. I haven't seen any black tail buffs here that would be for sale. It would take about 8 generations to get about 90-95% pure marans from line breeding this. Way too many interesting experiments for my space.

I'd love to see a picture of that bird if you still have it.

I try to document the growth of certain birds I'm raising as well of a geneology spreadsheet. I was planning on trying tho work with these, but ran out of space. This is the same cockeral that was pictured above. The buff cross.

yeah i was talking about the Buff genotype .
I ll no ad any thing to the marans for your future references stay pure you have a good P1 marans stock.

I do have a Black taill buff marans ( where my white recessive come from ) I m going to give t a go and see what they look a like( photo of one rooster isn t enough).

I have a better breeding plan this year well detail and complex .
I m going to be working with a single mating method .I have a third number of cockerel/Roosters to pullets/hen. some variety like a SCM I have a same number of males and females 6 x 6 will give me 36 combination.

I order a big incubator 500 plus eggs and a large hutcher too 5 basket .so I m going a be hatching every 15 day all group up easy to vaccinate and rise good for tugging .

my plan this year is to hatch 3/4000 chiks I have a lot orders,
8 weeks cockerels for the Pakistani and Indian people.
6 month cockerels for the chineese Restaurant
point of laying backyard laying pullets
7 month old proven breeders

and the list goes on.
i m a busy man I m farming with a Marans chooks. I m not breeding them for show.

this is my 3rd year with a chooks .and I managed to gather a god flock to work with 120 breeders this year. Happy about that.

You have a pretty serious setup. I'm just getting started. I'm going on my 2nd year, and have decided to focus all my energy into the GCMs for now. I've got about 1/2 acre setup with 2 separate penned 4 foot by 8 foot coops, and a third smaller 4 foot by 4 foot coop. All have separate runs. I've got a cheap 48 egg incubator and built a small 3 foot by 3 foot by 1 ft tall brooder for babies and a 5 foot by 5 foot by 2 ft tall brooder for growouts. Although I've been throwing the young ones out into a main run as soon as possible now.

We have a large garden and grow quite a bit of our own food, and the chickens get the spoiled and bad vegetables and left over foods. I try to sell the pullets/hens and if possible the cockerals (really hard to sell these though). If I am unable to sell the cockerals, I kill, butcher and freeze them. We also sell dozen eggs to cover the cost of chicken food. I'm retired military at the age of 36 and have lots of spare time, so I can play around with the birds. I've also been doing the olive eggers, as they are a novelty and in high demand here, but mostly to buy feed to support the rest of my birds.

the chicken from the buff orpington still look to me they have some Black . I don t think they carry the columbian restrector gene. GGCM hatch down should be like a buff with a barring marking ( I m speculating haven t see the chiks hatch down any where and I have been looking)

with a limited space you have is better if you focus on the Blue hen progeny with your GCM plus the GCM line you working on.
Like you said you have nice GCM pullets coming a long plus the one you are hatching from the blue hen you are gong for a treat next breeding season. Keep t sinple and efficient my friend specially when a space is limited.
I m focusing on building my own breeding flock and my own hatcheries a good business . the chooks are the center of my farm So I have a lot time and space OVER 100 coop pen/run ./nursery .

Chooks man

PS ; can post a photo of your Blue copper hen I want to see her type.

cheers

you have a good set up too , small enough to run one good variety with double color like GCM /BGCM with efficiency . I see why you have an organized mind you where in the military . that why I like your work you ar well organized .

guess that why you like the cuckoo they have a same military camouflage . HA HA haaaaaaaaaaa.

Keep a good work we are going to breed a good marans NO to worries about t.

These are not good photos, they are from a batch of chicks she hatched this spring, so she was broody and puffed up. I don't discourage broodiness, I just give them something to hatch, in this case it was a bunch of F4 olive eggers. I'll get a few better photos tomorrow of her confirmation.

they look very happy . GOOD man.

they are related the 2 hen s Blue and black.

she have a pretty face good eyes nice strait comb.

she s a lighter blue ,will do very well with a black based rooster ( like your GCM F0 or F1 is darker will balance the Blue in the future progeny)

how old is she

She is a little over a year old, so still young. She is related to to the black, however the black is a cross of a wheaten marans to a black copper, and then back to black coppers for 2 generation, an F3. I got both of them together as marans, as the breeder had a blue/black/splash pen. The black's comb grew slow, I just thought she was a late maturer. Turns out I accidentally got an olive egger. Her coloration is really nice and meets a black copper standard.

The lady breeder offered to buy her back, but my wife loves the green eggs. I tried hatching her eggs as an olive egger, but they are so far along in generation, I'm ending up with straight combs, or modified peas that look like straights. So they are basically marans with no or light leg feathering.
