Lets Talk Horse Genetics

a red based mare can hide one or two copies of agouti and you can't tell from looking at her. You either have to have her tested, or keep breeding her to black and if she NEVER throws a black foal, she is probably homozygous for agouti. You can have them tested at any number of testing services.

I have never been too much into the color genetics part. I have never bred for a color - when you breed horses for performance, color is the last thing you worry about.

Has anyone ever heard of the lethal pally gene? Of course the lethal white is pretty known but I was recently told that my breeding my pally mare to the pally stud we tried to breed her to a few years ago didn't take because of the lethal pally gene???? And I didn't buy that one either. I don't think that is why she didn't take the first 2 times but rather we couldn't pin point her cycle well. WELL, some of you know that my mare got out and went down the road last year to this same pally studs house and they put my mare in his pen and he apparently bred her and it took this time. She had a filly over 3 months ago and the filly is pally, going to be a golden pally just like her daddy

Something I am really excited about but who knows about the lethal pally gene?

In my original post I stated that she could produce a bay. The point I was making is that a true grullo stud and a true red dun mare will not produce a palomino, dunalino, etc. It's not physically possible.

There is no lethal cream dilution gene as far as I know. If there was such a thing, surely any scrupulous palomino stud owner would let you know when you brought them a palomino mare.

I also think someone has their facts mixed up on that one.

Statistically Palomino bred to Palomino will give you 50% chance for Pal, 25% chance for sorrel/chestnut, and 25% chance of cremello.

My point is that a grulla could very well hide smoky black and get you dunalinos, dunskins etc... I have seen horses registered as red dun that were in fact dunalinos. Not everyone that fills out the paperwork knows their genetics. I have seen horses registered as dun when they are just bay with a dorsal stripe.

There is a dilute lethal gene, known as Lavender Foal Syndrome. Arabians carry it.

Okay i've got a ?. I have a 1/2 arab 1/2 qh (probably) pinto mare. She is grey and white.I can post pics if you like. She has 3 tall socks a HUGE belly spot and a huge blaze on her face. She also has a smattering of white on both sides of neck and butt. I bought her in the EARLY spring and thought she was just grey.

But my most trusted horse friend breeds paints/pintos and qh's and said I bet when you wash her in the spring you will see she's pinto. She said she knew from the big blaze and perfect black eyeliner.I didn't know till I got her wet and saw the dark and also pink skin.

ANyway I want to breed her to Khartoon Kharacter and pinto arab with Khemosabi lines.

Trusted arab freind says I will have a 75% chance of getting a pinto foal. Trusted paint breeder says no chances are same as any other paint breeding 50/50. I tend to agree with arab lady but boy paint breeder has ALWAYAS been right in the past.

Also when I bought the mare she had a 21 (yes that IS right) old foal at her side that was SOLID bay.SHe had been bred back to a QH.If that helps at all.

Most pinto arabs are tobiano. She sounds like sabino. So... you have a fifty fifty chance from EITHER parent passing on color. Your arab breeder friend is right. You have a 25% chance of a tobiano (if he is tobiano) and a 25% chance of a sabino (if she is sabino) and a 25% chance of a tovero, (shows tobiano pattern and sabino pattern both overlaid on eachother) and a 25% chance it wil be a solid.

Please tell me in DUMMY terms the difference in the pinto patterns.

My paint breeder freind has tried and goes into such detail my eyes glaze over. I just thought it was tobaino and overo for a LONG LONG time.

My mare has NONE on her spine or back at all.

The Stallion is a bay and white with 3 (Maybe 4) tall white socks huge blaze and a large belly spot.

Does that change anything? Thanks for your patience.
