Lets Talk Nankins!

I have four buff hens and two roosters, a mix of RC and SC. I also have about 2 dozen eggs in the incubator

They are gorgeous birds and I keep them right outside my bedroom window so I can hear their trilling crow

I have two different breeding pens set up at the moment with a trio in each. I have Rosecomb roosters over single and rosecomb hens. I don't really want to hatch many this year as I am trying to just get a few nice ones in each comb-type to seperate into 2 more breeding pens next year and not have single and rose in the same pens. I eventually want to have two seperate breeding flocks, one single and one rose comb. Once that is accomplished I can better work on comb size, shape and texture, until then, I have to use what I have that is close to correct on comb and type. So far I have a really nice single comb cockerel hatched and two rosecombed ones that I can't really tell sex of yet, they are about three weeks I think. I have a broody hen hatching chicks as I type out in the breeding pen. She went broody and I left four eggs under her, so we'll see what she manages. There was one with a fairly large hole and one just pipped so I need to go out in a while and see what is progressing. I will probably move her to the broody pen in the garage as soon as she hatches them. Nankins are an awesome little breed! I love them. I've had lots of different breeds over the ten years I've been doing this, and never found any birds quite like these. I found my first ones in the hands of a 4-Her, and have since bought more from her and hatched more. I also have two little Nankin x Chocolate OEGB crosses that were the cutest little chicks as dayolds. I am hoping to keep them around as project birds, to see how the chocolate reacts with the black tailed red color pattern. I am thinking possibly they will be some type of chocolate quail-ish looking birds, from the way they are feathering in, but we'll see. Could be solid chocolates. Still too young to tell much about them. Here is one breeding pen, the one the chocolate chicks are from. (Have since sent the choc. hen up the road to our friends.)

I'm considering getting 3 hens (can't get more due to city ordinance), and I have been directed to Nankins by the ALBC - they sound like they'd be a perfect fit for my family. I'm having a hard time finding a breeder/club local to Kent, WA. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I have four Nankins, four weeks old... Can anyone tell me when I can expect to be able to determine gender/sex, and what I will need to look for as the first positive indicators?

I have a rose comb pullet, about 13 weeks old now.

Rio: Thanks for posting the link; I was still uncertain as to whether my girl was a blacktailed buff dutch or a nankin but the description of the black spot on the head as a chick cleared up that mystery. She's a nankin for sure. The little black spot is what made her stand out in the tub of mixed bantam chicks.

They really are sweet tempered birds.

Here she is at about a week old.
