I was 'underground' with my chickens for a couple years. It's kind of scary at times... relationships with neighbors can rise and fall and it just takes one person to call you in. However, my experience was fine, my hens made quite a bit of noise actually and I used to get a kick out of the look on someones face when they would walk their dog past my fence and one of my girls would start making that noise that only a chicken can make. There's no hiding it really. These people ususally showed a combination of amusement and confusion on their faces. I would suggest obviously keeping your coop as far from public view as practical in your situation. There are state specific threads here where you can join or lead the effort to legalize chickens in your community. BYC is partially responsible for getting enough people together to legalize chickens here in Denver not too long ago. It's a great feeling to be finally legal. Until that day happens, just keep your operation as small and under the radar as possible, and giving away eggs as someone else mentioned never hurts. Good luck,
