LG Incubator Temp Adjusting Knob Driving Me INSANE!! Any hints for me?

Get rid of the LG and buy a Hovabator 1588.

MP I am glad you said before me, that's what I was going to suggest, I know sometimes your frustration will take over and you will buy another different bator for your next hatch.

switching bators is cruel information to someone who might not have the extra cash to do so.. I have been there, am not now, but I remember..

Your seal might not be good.. try setting something very heavy on the lid.. like a stack of sears catalogs.

when you adjust temp. do not expect instant results. give it a couple of hours.. give your bator about 6 hours to warm up before adjusting the temps.

I like the idea of gluing a larger knob to the dial.. those solid state thermostats are very sensitive.

sometimes it is esier to pick the spot you want to stop at and then
twist the knob way off and come back to where you want to stop..

Hehe...Just had to throw in my 2 cents...
I'm not especially happy with my LG quality wise, but I havent had any problems with it, other than the humidity...
First starting it up, I check and adjust once a day for maybe 3 days to get it to perfection- it is usually only 1/2* off anyway. After the eggs are in, I normally only have to adjust it maybe 1ce every 3 ish days...if that...though our house is usually at a steady 60* no matter what the temp outside is.

I usually just put a beach towel/large bath towel over my bator...It helps hold the temp inside and it can raise it the hairline that you are looking for (and helps keep the humidity up a bit!).

For adjusting, like a few others have said, it just takes getting used to. It took me a while to figure out that I just barely have to turn it to get it up 1*. It isn't even enough to feel like you actually turned the knob....

i tryed fitting it with a knob and taping it down, didn't change, the problem isn't the knob, it's the stat, do not cover the lid with books the lid has air holes that must remain unblocked you can wrap a towel loose , if you can't afford a better bator be prepared to work hard, long, and lose some sleep,

I found that with the LG the trick is to have the room temp and humidity as stable as possible. I never could hold the temp at 99.5 it was always within a range of 98.5-100.5 or so. which still gave me a good hatch as long as I started with good eggs

i did not say cover the lid with books , I don't believe.. Weight it down with sears catalogs.. there are many ways to avoid the air holes.. even do as I havecone and put the air holes in the side of the lid.. I am not really an idiot..

and I run 6 LG at a time and have not worked any harder or lost any sleep.. and I have them set up in my detached garage with no extra heat..

Remember, the incubators are made by different companies and maybe that is why there is more success with Hovabators than LG.

The price is what gets the buyers, you buy cheap, you will get cheap. Not all of us have the problems with the LG like I did.

I agree with Miss Prissy, stick with the Hovabators! Im glad I did and love my Genesis and had very good success with hatching eggs. Most of the time I got four eggs hatched out of six eggs, and anywhere between eight to ten hatched with a doz or better in local eggs. Those eggs were SHIPPED!

With my own hatching with a friend's flock, I got 100 percent and with the LG, I had two chicks hatched out of 41 eggs. Now that is some radical differences!

Well, it's just the first day and the temperature varies by no more than 1/2 degree. I must have hit the spot.

I appreciate all the advice. I had originally planned on purchasing a higher end incubator, but, I got the new LG in a trade last fall (so long, guineas).

I am not wasteful by nature so I decided to put the extra effort into making this one work. I can at least give it one chance. I am incubating eggs from my flock along with a dozen purchased locally for just $10. If the hatch is bad I will not have much invested and I will move on to bigger and better.

Until then: use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.

What she said.

By the way, Hovas too require stable ambient temps to work well.

Go to the dimmer switch aisle in Walmart and pick up a 99cent dimmer knob, it has 3 sizes of plastic that fit over the sensitive knob then you put the big knob over top of that makes adjusments a breeze because you are not twisting so far at the center. Try it I love mine!

By the way I have 2 hovabators and 4 lg's I love the LG's better than the hovabators. those are a PAIN in the rear to adjust. AHHHGGGHH!!
