Hi!!! I am new to BYC and I am a gay Chinese-American chicken owner. I own English Lavender Orpingtons and a few mutts. I am in the process of hatching Salmon Faverolles, English chocolate orpingtons, and laced Brahma this year. I also own Japanese kois and racing pigeons.

If you're ever interested in Chinese breed chickens or their history I can also share some knowledge I have on them with you also.

I also want to tell you that you're very admirable and brave to start this post. It takes great courage to do what you did.

Finally I want to complete this greetings with you with a Chinese quote and a motto I live by "天地之间，为我独尊 " (
Tiāndì zhī jiān, wéiwǒdúzūn) meaning: Between heaven and earth, I am the sole master. Remember, you too is the sole master of your own heaven and earth. Don't let anyone else tell you what you can be or not be, to do or not do. If they don't like it they can go away or as the British say "bugger off".

Welcome! Do you race your pigeons?

I use to race them. I live I Los Angeles and with all those housing development they are pushing all those birds of preys and coons into my neighborhood so I in order to keep them safe I don't let them out much anymore. From 25 birds I am now down to 14 because of hawk and falcon attacks. But I might race them again once I can secure new stocks. The birds I am left with now are old and somewhat "Hapsburg".

Do you also race pigeons?

I understand, I also have lots of predators and I am near a big city. I do not raise pigeons, but one day soon I will.

Of course. Here let me introduce you to a breed of Chinese chicken not seen in the West. It's called the Jin Yang Chicken 景阳鸡. (You know those chickens you see in the cartoon Mulan.) The roosters have red combs and black faces and green ears. The hen is predominantly blacked faced. Feather color is Columbian. The roosters weight 12lbs and the hens weigh 10 lbs. Capons weighs 14lbs. They are a dual purpose bird but mainly raises for meat. They are raised in bamboo forests and to keep their meat as red as possible they are trained to fly.

I'm China they just keep the birds as it is. I believe that the meat chickens we have here doesn't exists in China. Because the Chinese believe in a purity of a certain breed they will not mix other breed with them. For example there is a silkie breed in China called the Tai He Wu Ji 泰和乌鸡 meaning The Dark Chicken of Great Peace, must be around the height and weight of a white leghorn, turquoise eared, white feathers, black tongued, feather footed with all 5 toes touching the ground resembling a dragon's claw. Any characteristics of western silkies that appear on a Tai He Wu Hi will be considered a mutt and destroyed.

The only massed produced "meat chicken" (also a dual purpose) in China is the Tu ji (土鸡) meaning local chicken or dirt chicken. It is a brown chicken with partridge patterns on the neck. The hen weigh 8 to 10 lbs the roosters weigh 11 to 12 lbs and capons 13 to 14 lbs.
