I'm rather new to this thread, but I am queer and very happy you are here. The more straight allies the better!I'm a cisgendered, straight, middle-aged/old lady, and grew up in a time when the door of the closet was firmly nailed shut. A long time ago, I had a thought process that went something like this:
If you're on the 10th floor of a burning building, and the only way you will live to see another day is if a firefighter saves you, do you care what race/religion/gender ID/sexual orientation/fill in the blank category that person is?
NO!
If it doesn't matter then,
IT. DOES. NOT. MATTER!
EVER!
I've been lurking a bit on this thread, and I hope that's ok. I wish I could give everyone who is feeling hurt by people who are supposed to love them a hug.
When I was 25 and wishing I could find "someone special," I was very lonely. Someone (older) laughed at me and said, "You're only 25!" I wanted to grab him by the throat and say, "No, buddy, I'm all of 25, that is a long time to feel lonely!"
Hugs for everyone.![]()
Thank you, @KaleIAm! I am still learning... if that's the right word... to think of people as not necessarily JUST male or female. I've done a bit of readjusting my thinking about how I interact with people, and how other people interact with people too.
I try to appreciate the similarities we all have, as well as appreciate the differences. The similarities draw us together, and the differences enrich us.
Yes it is! And I have WAY more years of habit than you do.Thank you for adjusting. I still trip up, using gendered words in public. Like Ma'am! In school I was taught to call my teachers Ma'am! In the store, I'll say "thank you ma'.. thanks!"... Jeez. Its a learning curve for all of us.
We've all been socialized, right? I make mistakes and presumptions, too. I also try to keep learning.Thank you, @KaleIAm! Even though it isn't the hen I wanted...I'm pleased to say that while I was away, our Olive Egger decided to go broody!! As soon as the feed store gets the breeds I want, I will be buying her chicks to raise for me.
