Lice giving me a headache!!!

My two new white Wyandotte’s have lice. I bought them about two weeks ago and they had quite a bit of lice at the start. I treated them 3 times since with lice powder and washed out their henhouse and creseoted the house too inside and out, something I heard would help kill them. I checked them today and both have a lot of eggs around their chin area and down their breasts as well as around their vent. After 3 powder applications there are still lice lice on them also. (Not as many however). I am going on holidays in 5 days for a week and I don’t want their condition to deteriorate. Since their moult is coming up on September or so would it be ok to cut the base of as many of the feathers covered in lice eggs and burn them ? Would that work ? I’m getting really annoyed with the bloody lice!! If any of you could give me some advice I would be so thankful Bobby

Do you have access to Amazon.com where you live? It carries Elector PSP and , while pricey, it knocks adult lice and the nits out in one soak.

It's costly up front, but the product is super concentrated and makes gallons and gallons of poultry safe insecticide. Mix up a bucket full and dunk each chicken up to the neck, hold for thirty seconds but do not rinse. Have towels ready to blot up the excess water. Do this on a warm day and let the chickens air dry. One treatment will be all you need.

Try over the counter lice shampoo for people. If you want to bathe your birds, every over-the-counter (OTC) treatment for head lice contains either pyrethrins (Rid or Triple X) or permethrin (Nix). They are effective treatment. Both only kill live pests, not the pests eggs. You can also spray the birds with permethrin which is effective but costs mush less than Elector PSP. If you do use permethrin dust, wear a dust mask. I put the poultry dust in the nest boxes. It usually takes more than one treatment about a week apart because it does not kill the pests eggs. I sprayed inside of the coops, every crack and crevice, on and under the roosts, ceiling, walls, floors, anywhere the pests can hide. The bonus is there is no egg withdrawal period. Last year I had a severe infestation of mites and thought the birds were molting but when they didn't seem to be getting their feathers back I investigated further and found mine were covered. ASAP I sprayed the inside of their coop thoroughly. I sprayed the birds and some gave baths too. It helped but I used flea shampoo so it didn't get rid of them all but helped. If I ever need to bathe them again I will use the OTC shampoos. I have tried a lot of different things including DE and the birds still had the mites then I tried the permethrin. It works. It may take a few days but you should notice an improvement. If you have a TSC they carry the permethrin dust, the premixed spray bottles and the concentrate. Since you will be gone for around a week treat them before you leave then again when you get back. Good luck...

Elector PSP is good but very expensive and if you read their fact sheet it does say that repeat treatments may be necessary.

Yes, your milage may vary, as the quip goes. But I treated for lice a few years back, and one was all that I needed to do, and the lice have not returned, which may pr may not be related to Elector. The price equalizes out since it's highly concentrated. If your budget can stand the hit, I highly recommend it over the powder permethrin. Liquid permethrin may be better and provide beter coverage than the powder.

That's not good enough. It doesn't kill lice.

I'll look right now for something that will work.


May I ask why in the world you knowingly bought birds infested with lice?
