Ok I was holding my big roo today. I noticed these little white bug things on his head and face. Are they lice? Is it transferable to me? how do I get rid of them?

those are feather lice. dust your roo with sevin dust, repeat in 10 days. dust any other chickens as well and also dust your coop/chicken house. they are not transferable tp you.

Its weird. I checked all the other birds and he is the only one with and bugs on him! Grrr...Can I dust and still use the eggs? We sell our eggs so if they aren't safe to eat I should probably know. lol

the eggs are safe to eat. i had a white rock roo with feather lice and none of the other hens got them neither, like in your case. but i dusted them anyway, redusted in 10 days to kill any eggs that may have hatched. i changed out the hay in their house and sanitized it with bleach/water, then dusted with sevin dust. i havnt had a problem since.

Sevin dust contains really nasty chemicals. I wouldn't eat the eggs for 2 weeks afterwards. If you've dusted the birds with it, then they'll certainly ingest a little and absorb a little. I would think you should at least warn your clients.

I just had to do this. I treated with ivermectin and the lice are gone. I'm feeding the eggs to the dogs for the next week or so, and then I'll let the people who get my eggs decide when they are comfortable eating the eggs again.

I've used Sevin dust for my yard, garden, chickens, dogs, cats anything and everything that could have lice, mites, fleas or ticks. It works great and I've never stopped eating the eggs because of it. No problems, bad tastes or anything. However, when I sell eggs I inform my customers and let them decide.

tammyd57 you are absolutely correct, there is NO withdrawal period with sevin dust. lemurchaser i hope you used wazine17 prior to using ivermectin. if you didnt you could possibly kill your chickens with worm overload if they're infested with worms and you've never wormed them before. there is a 2 week withdrawal period with wazine and 2 week period after ivermectin use for a total of 1 month discarding eggs.yes, ivermectin kills lice/mites as well as many many types of worms.
