I have over 60 laying hens and when they got lice I immediately took action against the bugs with weekly cleanings and DE. The responsibilty to care for your flock is hard at times but it's worth keeping them healthy and happy.

How does sevin dust get into the eggs to cause such a very long withdrawal period? The withdrawal time is probably a month or more for it to get out of their systems, an insecticide like that may stay even longer. A large amount of the dust will just cause a lot of sneezing, animals respitory systems can handle it easy because theirs are different than ours. I'm not quite sure myself exactly why, a friend explained what to do with the hens when they got lice. People can breathe it in but it may not actually do anything, it depends on how much DE was in the air. DE is just crushed up diatoms (fossilized algae with hard shells). It isn't bad to breathe in but our lungs just don't like the irritation it causes, chickens for example are closer to the ground so the DE just doesn't cause them any problems, (i really don't know the answer of why) but trust me, you won't die from it or anything, wear a mask/bandana, air out the chicken coop if felt needed afterwards. DE is a natural insecticide. If taken internally, it can actually help rid the body of parasites. Sorry to confusing anyone.
Coconut oil will remove lice eggs from feather shafts.I've heard of coconut oil for lice but I've never tried it before. We use it in our family for health and stuff. I'll try it.
Quote: Tell us how sevin dust gets into eggs and why there's such a LONG withdrawal period using sevin dust...you seem to be the expert.
DE is useless when wet as it states in the link...."like sand".....wet....just like inside the chickens innards. DE does not prevent nor treat worms. You'll find out eventually.
Post #76.Sorry, I put down some faulty info, I forgot to reread what I had typed. Look up DE for yourself and see what it can do naturally. The only thing it is fossils, there is no harm, as I said before I don't know why hens can breathe it in, I've used it on my flock and they're are perfectly healthy and so am I. The sevin is on them their skin absorbs it, so it ends up in the eggs they produce, to cleanse them completely of it will take some time.
To beeconeofhope: Yes it will
