Good Evening ya'll, i got some issues with our show-pig. 1.) He was slow at gaining weight. 2.) He got validated and dewormed the same day and then he started showing signs of lameness and not finishing his feed and not being productive. 3.) He got rid of one hook worm in his poo and not another since. His environment consists of the ag-farm which has concrete floor, nipple-fed waterer, pelleted bedding, and Purina 509. He gets feed one 3 pound scoop and yet still won't finish all of. I would like for your advice to help me alleviate his issues and help get back to normal. TIA

If he has been this way his whole life, he may just be a poor-thriver. These pigs are ones that easily get worms, don't eat well, are slow to gain weight and easily get diseases. However, there could also be something holding him back. A dirty, drafty, or wet environment, untreated parasites, poor quality food, sores in his mouth or throat, ect.

I've read lots of pig keeping books, but I'm not an expert. There are so many bacterial, fungal, viral and parasitic infections out there that diagnosing based on symptoms is nearly impossible without an expert or a vet. However, you can give a thorough check-over, try cleaning out his pen (including feeder and nipple waterer) and deworming him.

Best of luck!

This may not be an option, but have you considered replacing that pig? There are poor doers in all classes of livestock, and quite frankly in my experience it is usually not worth fooling with them.
