Light for winter laying....

I just posted this to another poster, then started wondering something...I read once that a strand of Christmas lights is enough light in the longer winter nights to keep the girls laying.
How many hours exactly do they need, and is the small light a strand give off enough?
I plan on getting a timer, but can use a regular 25W bulb too, if the Christmas lights aren't enough.

I use a 7 watt night light. I keep it on 24/7. I have no problems with my birds laying in the winter or summer. I used to have a light on a timer until the timer died but realized it wasn't making any difference. But, I live in Florida. If you live in a northern state it might make a difference as the daylight hrs are shorter.
