Chicken newbie here....We bought our chicks 2 weeks ago at the store..

Most of the time the "red" light has been on but at times during the day I have turned it off and opened our blinds in the bathroom to give them some daylight. Is it ok to do this? Does it really matter. When it is off they don't act as if they are cold, they are quite active but it seems the light being ON makes them less active, they seems to stay under it a lot.

I don't like to leave the house with no one home and leave that light on. Is it ok to leave for short periods of time with it off? They are in a small bathroom with one window so it stays fairly warm in there since it is small, door stays closed with warmth of the sun coming through the window.

The goal is to keep them warm and happy. If that comes from a heat lamp or from the sun it does not matter.

If they are in the house, keeping temps in an acceptable range is much easier.

Good luck with them.

BTW, make sure that the heat lamp is secure, wouldn't want it falling and starting a fire.

thanks, it is very secure. It's actually clamped to our countertop on the sink and DH also used a heavy duty clamp he had as added protection. We also have a framed screen over the container the chicks are in so if it did fall it wouldn't fall in..
