This might be a question for the European members here since we have so few stateside, but what is the genetic makeup of a Light Sussex if you used the Chicken Color Calculator? Are they Columbian?

What about the Coronation Sussex? Are they blue or lavendar Columbian?

Thanks!!!

Light sussex are columbian (silver) with some melanisers (I think) & selection for the tidy whie lacing around the hackle feathers.

The original Coronation Sussex bred in UK were Andalusian blue columbian. I don't think Lavender had been found when they were first created. In UK Coronation Sussex are still Andalusian blue columbian. In Aus (& probably NZ) Coroation Sussex are Lavender Columbian.

Light sussex are wheaten or can be brown at the E locus. The birds with a great deal of black in the hackles (females) are brown. Wheaten in combination with the columbian helps remove some of the hackle black in females.

Light Sussex (LS) in UK are always on wheaten (eWh). LS are, probably, the most common pure breed kept in UK. They are the breed used as commercial layers in UK before the modern day commercial hybrids. There are a lot of lighter build utility types around. I've seen a lot of LS in my time, exhibition quality & utility. I have never once seen LS on brown (eb). Perhaps David will tell us whether LS are sometimes on eb down-under.
