You're going to get different opinions but here's mine. I use a Intermatic duel timer--it comes with 4 U-shaped clips that allow you to turn on and off a light twice a day. I turn a 20w, florescent Light Stick on at 6 am and off at 9 then on at 4 pm and off at 9--all EDT. I figure this gives them 15 hrs of light in the same light/dark sequence that they'd get in the summer (we're at 13 hrs right now) Some people will add hours just in the morning, others just in the evening while some will burn them 24/7. The feeling is that this last thing burns the birds out. Just don't go too cheap on the timer--I can't remember what I paid for this one because I've had it for about 10 years(had to run down to the coop to check on the brand name), but wasn't the cheapest one and certainly has lasted.
