Lighter Fluid as humane euthanasia?

I have tried the lighter fluid technique before and it was far from humane. Took far too long to kill the bird and the whole time it cheeped like it was suffering and flipped about. Now (after trying a few "gas" methods) I just go straight for the pellet gun. It's fast and the poor little thing doesn't even have time to know what hit him.

I just don't think these "gas" methods are all that great. Took 30 minutes for one chick I had. Just break it's neck or shoot it with a pellet gun... trust me. If the thought of a broom on it's neck bothers you... you will cry yourself to sleep after trying lighter fluid. You can literally see their head swell (from their brain swelling).

A sharp hatchet is the best and quickest and needs to be done as soon as possible. It seems to me the most well-intentioned people usually end up being the cruelest by taking so much time to find out the "best" way to kill something. Meanwhile, the animal is suffering a slow and painful death. I understand that you want to have an easy end for your bird. I'm not trying to sound mean or rude, but, I guess that's how it come out sometimes. I'm sorry for your loss.

Yeah I agree. I know I have learned to "toughen up" alot through owning and raising chickens. Before I was a true-blue tree hugging animal loving type... now, I RESPECT the animals and have learned that (exactly what you said) sometimes it is worse to keep them alive in hopes they will "get better" or keep them around while you try to find a way to put them down that is easiest for you. You should do what is easiest for the bird. (maybe I sound mean now) A quick snap of the neck, shot to the head, hatchet to the neck... these are all what's best for the bird... even if it isn't what's easiest for you. Sorry to be blunt... it's just my way. Trust me... I feel for you, but it is just a reality of having a animal like chickens.

Dry ice and water produces CO2. Or a CO2 tank, make a gas chamber or use a plastic bag. But breaking the neck is quickest for the animal.

I use the broom stick method and find it the best, no blood, nothing, a little flapping due to nerves and then it's over usually within the minute, you place a broomstick on the floor place the birds neck underneath stick put a foot either side of birds head on the stick and pull sharply upwards on it's legs when done quickly without hesitation it is the best way I can understand you feeling nervous not having done it before is there anyone that can help do it for you instead?
