How much light do you need? I have a 1Watt LED light in my 4'x8' coop that I run from a motorcycle battery and it's bright enough to see what I'm doing in the dark when I get home late. When the battery dies, I just bring it back in the house and recharge it.

I have some information on getting started with LED here: http://www.cedarlakeinstruments.com/products/led.html and you can PM me, or reply to this thread (I haven't been on here a lot recently I'm afraid) if you want more information.
I've been thinking of making a simple timer that can run from batteries since the commercial ones are expensive, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Too many projects, too little time :-)

Thanks SLC, I was planning on searching for a solar light for the new coop, but you did it for me. Got the page book marked and will order it next pay.
