Does anyone know exactly how/why light affects a hen's laying? I know more light, more eggs, but wonder why.

I'm just taking a guess, but it may have to do with longer days signifying that it's a good time to expand the flock to take advantage of warm weather to rear the young and also the beginning of the season of plentiful food sources for the expanding flock. This is usually the way with wild animals, and chickens have all descended from the red jungle fowl who still inhabit forests in South America.
