Can baby chicks be raised without natural light during their first weeks in life or will they develop some sort of nutritional deficiency?

I brooded my baby chicks in a big tuperware container in my garage. It was April last year, and it was pretty chilly at night particularly. I used a 100 watt light on them for heat. They did not get much natural light in the garage, and they did not have a problem.
