First year layers laid thru the winter without adding light, with diminishing rates in my experience. After first year, my flock needed lights. I usually play around to keep the hours down . I have had success with 12. CFL works fine.
I keep my feed and water in the coop, so when the birds are waken at 4:30am, I do not have to wake to put out the feed. Never have rodent problem. I would imagine having feeder in the run would be more inviting to free loaders.
