I have been researching to figure out why my two 13 week old silkies are the only ones who huddle underneath the coop instead of going in like everyone else, and noticed in many of the threads here suggest a light in the coop, and that many times the silkies will go in once there is a light. My question is....does the light need to be right inside the coop or can it be something like fairy lights strung around the outside so that some of the light goes in the windows? Do you guys leave them on all night or just for an hour or two?

Every evening we have to go out there and shoo them up the ramp. :barnie

They may not be the sharpest knives in the drawer but are the cutest things on the planet.

The lights need to be inside coop so chicken does not fear going into a dark space. The lights do not need to be on all night whatsoever. Just estimate how long, by observing when they do decide to enter. Set on timer, or use a solar light that will run out of juice in a few hours.
Many chickens do like to hang outdoors in run area, and forget when to enter coop to roost.
Most of my chickens roost in late afternoon, to early evening, before it gets too dark. My Polish chickens seemed to like hanging out longer than rest of flock, just scratching around outside coop. I have an automatic pop door, and sometimes they do get locked out if it is cloudy. Pop door is operated with an Electric Eye Sensor.
WISHING YOU BEST.......................and :welcome
