Like giving crack to a drug addict .....

That's a mom's job.... like telling the 5 year old to eat his brussel sprouts.

I do just the opposite. I don't feed any scratch until the end of the day and then only about 1 1/2 lbs. between 2 turkeys and 20 chickens (that's one progresso soup can) and they gooble it up quick. That is the last thing they get before they roost for the night.

I like this idea also ... plus, if they're free ranging, I think it can be .. um ... incentive .. to come into the coop when I call them .. right??

Hmmm.. maybe this Scratch Head thing isn't so bad afterall...

"Here, my pretty little addicts .... mama has some SCRATCH for you .. BWA HA HA HA"

I do a roll call in the morning and watch for physical problems with the birds. I write down which one needs attention and then at night I pull them off the roost and treat them. They get a nice cage for the night with food and water. I can never pull the Guineas off the roost so I have to corner them (too high and too wild).

The Guineas hardly ever need any attention, they are such hardy little turds. I usually get the "stink eye" if I am too slow with the throw. Bunch of tweakers.

My 4 chickens don't fiend for scratch...they like it, but they don't get totally nutty for it.

After they started on layer crumbles, I started adding a small amount of flax seed, scratch and rolled grains in with their crumbles (now switched to layer pellets). Whenever I throw some into the leaves in their run, I throw the same mixture 90% pellets and 10% the other stuff.

They do go nutty for a egg, spinach and cheese scramble

but that only happens once a week or less

My flock prefers to free range more than any treat given in their run, they don't get to free range everyday because I am an overprotective (older) parent. I throw some scratch out in the main yard and they ignore it
