For those of you who don't know, Lil'Bit is my half blind runt chicken. From the time this chicken was 5 weeks old and it became apparent that she was handicapped she's been spoiled rotten.
She's the only chicken allowed in the house for any length of time and of course the best treats are served in the house.
She gets carried everywhere, all the time.
My roosters weren't allowed to touch her for the longest time. When we moved them to their coop she acted like she couldn't see well enough to jump up on a roost by herself so I'll always put her on the roost at night and go out and take her down from the roost in the morning. It's become such a routine that now she waits at the garden gate for me each evening and I carry her in to her roost. If another chicken is in her favorite spot, I move them.
Lil'Bit layed two tiny eggs a couple months ago (after she was forcibly mated by my roo), but nothing since then. I knew she wasn't egg bound and she appeared normal, so I just assumed that her laying eggs was not to be. We made her a special nest box on the floor, tucked up under the other boxes but it's never been used.
This evening I went out to the coop to refill the feeder and found Lil'Bit sitting on one of the regular nest boxes! I got an even bigger surprise when she jumped down from the nest, then jumped up on roost to look out the window before jumping down again. She gave me her usual "peep-peep" and walked out the door!
I am a college educated woman! How do these chickens keep getting the best of me?!?
P.S. Yes, she left a cute little egg in the nest.
