Lily, our broody white cochin FINALLY is a momma!,

when she first went broody LAST month, I gave her 6 eggs, everything went good, but one by one her eggs kept disapearing, finally day 19 arrived on her last egg, no peeping, no pipping, day 20 late night her baby hatched, but it was so terribly weak that it died within an hour.

she took a two or three day break, and then promptly plopped down on 14 eggs that I'd left in the nest box, well about 7 weeks of constant(almost) sitting, she's got three BIG babies to show for it, atleast two more on the way!

2 are rusty brown with white around the eyes, and white throats, and black back stripes, the newst, still wet baby is solid yellow, all three have clean legs and four toes, one egg is close to zip and looks solid black the baby does, the other is still working on pipping.

pics tonight!, I gotta go to work

this one is an exact copy of the very hatched baby that was killed.

there is another egg starting to get into zip, it looks yellow, like the other one, I hope it has no neck fuzz!, and! the silkie egg I though has died has internally pipped!

now, I've got the hutch setup ready, even a litterpan(clean!) with hay for her, I THINK the last eggs she's got will be the only ones, so would it be safe to go ahead and move her??

the babies are getting real mobile, and walking around, I don't any more killed.

Hi,

They are so cute! Congratulations!

Who killed the other chicks, another hen? I think the best thing to do with a broody and her eggs is separate from the rest of the flock in a pen that nothing can get into. Good luck!

yes, most likely another hen killed them, thefirst baby killed was a yellow and brown naked necked baby, the other looked like the dark chick.

I think tonight, in just a few minutes actually, we're going to move momma and her as of now 5 babies into the spare 4 x 4 rabbit hutch, since it's dark, she won't move off the eggs, that'll give the pipping silkie egg time to hatch, and the othert two too if they're gonna do anything.

there are 5 babies now, another yellow baby with some black on it's back just hatched about 20ish minutes ago

the little silkie finally hatched, looks like maybe an hour ago, it's still drying off, and! it IS a purebred silkie, atleast looks like to me, black skin, black legs, black beak, 5 toes.

not sure on the color though.

this is the silkie chick, IS he purebred?, he looks like it to me, and what color is it?, if it's pure it came from a white roo and a black hen.

I got some cutey pooty pics of the babies first eating time too.
