As others have replied, DE is effective to control exoskeleton bugs only. The microscopic spines of the diatom skeletons slice the bugs joints where they rub together causing dehydration and death. Earth worms or red wiggles are not exoskeleton creatures and are not affected. I have used DE on my vermicompost bin to control ants since it will not harm worms. We also use DE for scorpion control. Garden or food grade DE only works in powder form. If it gets wet, it is not picked up by the insects crawling over it. BTW, food grade DE is used to treat grains for human consumption. It kills bugs that are in grains without using chemical pesticides.

Pool Filter DE is heated to make granular texture that can allow water to pass through it. It is useless for insect control. It is very hazardous to any animal or person that inhales it.

there are also studies that say DE is ineffective!

but its cheap and it dosnt harm the birds. also if you look at the table in the first link DE actualy contains small amounts of some very useful minerals.

Did you actually read the study? There were no statistically significant effects between the control group and the DE group.
